A Walmart employe in Indiana has been charged with felony theft after she was caught munching Oreos filched from the store’s shelves, police said.

When confronted by cops with video of the alleged theft, Penny S. Winters, 63, admitted she ate the cookies and said she had been doing it for years.

After a box of opened Oreo cookies were discovered at a Walmart in Portage, Ind., and an investigation was conducted, a longtime Walmart employee admitted she not only consumed Oreos she hadn’t paid for, but also took junk food from the company every week for four years. Penny S. Winters, 63, was also caught on video during her evening shift eating the popular sandwich cookies.

In an incident report released to ABC News by police in Portage, Ind., officials state they responded to the Portage Walmart on Feb. 18 in reference to an internal theft investigation. Upon arrival, police spoke with a Walmart manager who said an empty food wrapper was located within the store on Feb. 12, coupled with surveillance video footage, indicated Winters was responsible.

As to why she repeatedly stole the items, Winters told police she could not afford them. Winters could not explain to police why she chose to steal “junk food” instead of legitimate food products normally associated with necessity. Winters was employed as a full-time maintenance worker making an hourly wage of $11.40 an hour.

Winters told police she had been a Walmart employee for approximately seven years.

“We have high standards on how we conduct business in our stores and high expectations for all our associates. This includes acting with honesty, integrity and following company policies and guidelines,” Walmart media relations spokeswoman Ashley Hardie told ABCNews.com. “Unfortunately, Ms. Winters failed to meet those expectations. As a result of her violation of company policy she is no longer with the company.”

***I need to note that in my town & many like mine Walmart pay is
a little above minimum wage. Around $6.80+ after taxes!
When you think that she would have to work around 30 min to make
enough money to pay for those Oreos!

Also I need to say that from my time way back working at Albertsons,
they had open packages of ice cream pops that where from claims.
They where in the freezer for the workers. They let workers have stuff there.

Over all Walmart makes $419 billion in sales!
And an average one Walmart has about $600,000+ in losses
from shoplifting! But those losses are all not cookies!
Food was not listed as a part of claims when I worked there!
So the shame really goes to Walmart!

Also the Berkeley study points that it would cost at most an consumer
$0.46 per every $1187 spent at Walmart to pay the workers $12 an hour!

Now the worker gets all this over $3+ for a package of cookies over all that time.
$1100+ total! Give it that she does not eat the whole bag, once open,
no sale it's a total loss. What is fair?

Really this is nothing new. All Walmart workers know they get
harder on workers stealing than shoplifters.
They told me when I worked there not to waste time chasing shoplifters,
it takes away time for putting things on the shelf! But if a worker does it!

Really! That worker needs a lawyer!
It sounds like Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Compensation, Nominating and
Governance Committee Charter is pushing this!
To all workers these are the people making your life hell!!!!
