Here are some simple ways to be more self-sufficient this coming year, whether you own your own land, live in an urban apartment or rent a suburban home.
1) Learn a new survival skill like foraging, fire building or hunting
2) Learn a new homemaking skill like knitting, sewing, quilting or candlemaking
3) Learn a new skill that may be used to barter in case of financial struggles
4) Prioritize paying off debt, at least, do not add any additional debt load
5) Learn to cut hair, paint your own nails, do your own spa treatments
6) Invest in canning jars of many sizes. You can use them for canning (obviously), drinking glasses, dry goods storage, household storage, decoration, lamps - they are so versatile, reusable and easy to sanitize in the event of illness within your household.
7) Invest in reusable hygiene items like cloth diapers and feminine napkins, as well as cloth table napkins and cleaning towels.
8) Invest in books. Even though this made my list of Top 21 Items to Stock Up On, it bears repeating as books work for gaining knowledge and for entertainment when you're sick, when the power's out, when finances are tight, etc.
9) Though I'm sure most of my readers already know how to do this, learn to cook. Cooking at home is a money saver, a way to insure the healthfulness of your food and a great survival skill (McDonalds won't be open if the SHTF, it probably won't even be open if you have a local power outage). To that end, even if you already know how to cook, learn techniques for cooking on camp stoves, wood stoves and over an open fire.
10) Plant an edible garden with fruits, veggies and herbs.
11) Learn to can your harvest to extend its shelf life.
